The fact is not widely known, but BMW is today a leader in electric mobility. 600 electric Mini are currently on the road. Thanks to AC Propulsion, the californian company which provided the drivetrain, they have the best technology available. The people who drive these electric Minis are a happy bunch, but that doesn’t stop BMW to look for more, and that’s what the forthcoming Megacity will bring. Actually, we don’t know much about it. It will be electric, it will use a lot ultra-light yet high-strength composite CFRP (carbon fibre-reinforced plastic), and it will come in 2013. That’s all we know, with the 2013 launch date being today’s big news.
Another worthwhile information is that this new model will not be a BMW. Created by BMW, and built by BMW, but sold under a sub-brand of BMW. We guess the germans don’t want to mess with their brand image. The Megacity vehicle will be a small urban car, not what BMW is known for. So let’s go for a distinct label, but that should not prevent BMW dealers from selling it. We shall see a concept within 12/18 months…
