With a three minutes refilling time and a 370 miles range, the Hyundai ix35 Fuel Cell has characteristics no battery-electric car can match. Yet, we still think of those fuel cell cars as one-off prototype, but it’s no longer the case. This hydrogen-running Hyundai is a regular production vehicle. It’s built in very low volume, no doubt about that, but it has certainly left the lab. Actually, the fuel cell car is coming down the street. Well, that providing you live in Copenhagen.
Denmark has been a leader in renewable energies for several decades now, and it has decided to have hands on experience with hydrogen. It’s pretty sad that the only company which replied to its demand wasn’t European, but it’s very fortunate for Hyundai, which will get here an opening with a prestigious customer: the city of Copenhagen. It will get 15 cars for use in the municipal fleet. They will help the city achieving its goal to become carbon-neutral by 2025. As many more cars will be needed, it’s a great and growing opportunity for Hyundai.
