Clean zero emission buses are not a distant dream in Switzerland. In Brugg, 20 miles North-West of Zurich, they are a reality that anyone can see, and use daily. The bus company is PostAuto, it got 5 Mercedes Citaro fuel cell buses. Those are from the latest generation, with the long lasting fuel cells. 10 years ago, fuel cells had a 5,000 hours lifespan, but those should last 12,000 hours. That’s not as good as the typical diesel in a heavy vehicle, but fuel cells are now more durable than the average car engine. With in-wheel motors, fuel consumption is also significantly reduced, down to 14 kilograms of hydrogen per 100 km.
Pretty good for a full-size bus! PostAuto Schweiz AG plans to keep them 5 years, avoiding the emission of 2,000 tons of CO2. We guess many more cities should get similar buses…
